Cashback portals provide shoppers with a rebate, usually calculated as a percent of the purchase. Instead of navigating to your desired website to complete a purchase, cashback portals require you to first navigate to their site, and from there to your desired website. This allows the cashback provider to track your purchase, and provide you with a rebate. Over the last few years cashback portals have proliferated with everyone from credit card issuers to airlines trying to get in on the game, as the cashback referrer gets a cut from your purchase as well. Here’s a short overview of some reputable cashback options, which allows you to earn additional cash or points when booking travel (or making any other online purchase).

Cashback Shopping Portals

There are hundreds of cashback shopping portals out there. We found the following to have a great balance between high cashback %, accurate reporting, and timely payment.

  • Rakuten (sign up via this link and receive a cashback bonus!)- this is my preferred cashback portal, as they offer a host of superior features:
    • Google Chrome Extension: install this on our desktop browser and you’ll never forget to activate cashback again. This allows you to skip the step of first having to navigate to the Rakuten website, and also provides a popup reminder when shopping on a site that offers cashback.
    • Payout Options: Rakuten offers three payment options once cashback posts to your account: they can mail you a check, deposit the funds to your PayPal account, or issue the cash equivalence (1 point per cent) as Amex MR points (since I value Amex MR points at 2 cents per point, I find this to be the most valuable option- you must be an American Express credit card holder).
    • High Cashback: Rakuten offers high cashback for travel, with occasional promotions such as Double Cashback days.
    • Promo Codes: Rakuten shows available merchant promo codes when navigating to the desired merchant page. Additionally, promo codes are visible via the Chrome Extension mentioned above.
  • Mr. Rebates (sign up via this link and receive a cashback bonus!)- while Mr. Rebates does not have as many features as Rakuten, they are still a great choice for cashback.
    • Payout Options: Mr. Rebates offers four payment options once cashback posts to your account: they can mail you a check, deposit the funds to your PayPal or Venmo account, or issue a Gift Card to your merchant of choice.
    • High Cashback: Mr. Rebates usually offers higher cashback percentages than other cashback portals. See travel cashback offers here.

Credit Card Shopping Portals

Credit Card issuers recently joined the cashback fray. Here are some popular options:

  • Capital One: Earn Capital One Shopping Credits which can be redeemed for gift cards. You do not need to have a Capitol One credit card or bank account to use this portal.
  • Citi Bank: You must have a Citi credit card to shop via the portal. Earnings will be deposited as points to your Citi rewards account.
  • Chase: You must have a Chase credit card to shop via the portal. Earnings will be deposited as points to your Chase rewards account.

Airline Shopping Portals

Many airlines offer shopping portals as well. You will earn airline miles at the airline you choose to shop through.

Additional Options

Some highly popular merchants, such as Airbnb, are not eligible for cashback via any portals. (While airlines are generally not eligible either, you can book flights via a 3rd party/OTA to receive cashback- Airbnb has no such option).

We’ve found one workaround for Airbnb: you can earn British Airways Avios miles or Delta SkyMiles when booking through the BA or Delta link below. Enter your membership number in the link, and then proceed to booking (T&Cs apply).

Do you know of any other travel merchants that are not available on any cashback portal but do offer cashback/miles/points with a workaround? Comment below!
