โ๏ธ Day 1 โ Arrival & The Blue Lagoon

We flew out of Newark at 7:35 landed in KEV Iceland at 6:00 AM after our overnight flight and picked up our Sixt rental car. Before the trip, we had planned every detail ourselvesโroutes, hotels, activities, meals, and timingโbecause we wanted maximum flexibility rather than joining a full-week guided tour. For us, being able to adjust plans, stop wherever we wanted, and explore at our own pace made the trip feel more personal and relaxed.
The first stop was the Blue Lagoon, the perfect place to unwind after flying through the night. Floating in warm, milky-blue water surrounded by cold November air felt like stepping into another world.
After relaxing, we drove to Vik along peaceful, empty one-lane roadsโone of the perks of off-season travel. We checked in at Hotel Kria, ready for the adventure ahead.

๐ Day 2 โ Black Sand Beach & Glacier Hike at Sunset

Wednesday morning began with a quick coffee stop at Skool beans bus cafe then we drove to the iconic Black Sand Beach, just five minutes from our hotel. Enormous waves crashed onto volcanic sand, and sea stacks rose dramatically from the ocean.
That afternoon, we headed to Skaftafell for a 3-hour glacier hike with Troll Expeditions. Hiking across blue ice at sunset was surrealโthe sky glowed orange, pink, and purple, reflecting across the glacier.
We spent the night at the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon, where we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights lighting up the sky.

๐ Day 3 โ Diamond Beach, Iceberg Boat Ride & Skogafoss

Thursday started with a trip to Diamond Beach, where chunks of glacial ice sat sparkling on the black shoreline. We also took an iceberg boat tour, getting close views of giant floating ice.
During our drive back west, we stopped at Skogafoss, one of Icelandโs most powerful waterfalls. That night, we slept in a unique Aurora Igloo, surrounded by peaceful wilderness.

๐ฏ๏ธ Day 4โ5 โ Shabbos in Reykjavรญk

We arrived in Reykjavรญk on Friday and checked in to Center Hotels Laugavegur for Shabbos. We spent the meals at Chabad, joined by about 20 Jewish locals. The warmth of the community made Shabbos memorable, and we stayed for Havdalah and Melave Malka.
Shabbos in Reykjavรญk was quiet, cozy, and very special.
โ๏ธ Day 6 โ Snowmobiling on Langjรถkull Glacier

.
Sunday morning, we geared up for a 4-hour snowmobile and ice cave tour on the massive Langjรถkull Glacier. Riding over endless white snowfields was thrilling and unforgettable.
We spent the night at Hotel Geysir, situated right next to bubbling geothermal areas.
๐ Day 7 โ Geysers, Gullfoss & Bridge Between Continents

Monday morning, we visited the Geysir geothermal field, just a short walk from our hotel, then continued to Gullfoss, where icy water roared into the canyon.
Our last night was at Hekla Horizon, a calm and scenic retreat. Before returning the car on Tuesday, we stopped at the Bridge Between Continents, standing on both tectonic plates at once.

๐ฌ Why We Chose to Plan the Trip Ourselves
We decided early on not to take a guided tour for the entire week.
Hereโs why:
โ We wanted maximum flexibility
We could stop anywhere, stay as long as we liked, and change plans on the spot if weather shifted.
โ We preferred exploring at our own pace
Some places we stayed longer, others we skippedโour schedule was completely ours.
โ Tours can cost significantly more
While guided tours are easier, they often include higher costs for transportation and pre-set activities.
โ But tours ARE easier for some travelers
A tour removes all the effort of planning, booking, navigating, and scheduling.
If someone wants a stress-free experience and doesnโt mind sticking to a guideโs timetable, a tour could be the better choice.
For us, self-planning was perfect, but for others, a guided trip might be simpler and smoother.
๐ก Iceland Travel Tips (Especially for November)
๐ก๏ธ 1. Prepare for real cold.
Around 25ยฐF with strong windsโlayer up.
๐งญ 2. Avoid night driving.
Roads are dark, icy, and one-lane.
๐ 3. Off-season = empty roads.
Almost no traffic the entire week.
๐ฝ๏ธ 4. Bring kosher food.
We brought all meals for the weekโthere are almost no kosher options outside Reykjavรญk.
๐ 5. November is ideal for Northern Lights.
We saw them near Vik on Wednesdayโan unforgettable sight.
